Max uncaps his Magic Marker again in XBLA’s ‘Curse of Brotherhood’

XBLA exclusives are becoming rarer and rarer. The latest is a sequel to Max & The Magic Marker by developer Press Play. Max: The Curse of Brotherhood sees a very impressively CG-rendered hero accidentally banish his brother to another dimension, then going on a quest (with the help of his reality-altering marker) to rescue him.

The presentation has evolved from brightly-colored cel-shading to a more realistic 3D look, though the 2.5D gameplay is intact. In the introductory trailer, the magic marker is used to draw vines, water, and more.

The game launches this spring on XBLA, for 1200 Microsoft Points. It’s a cautionary tale, to warn you of what would happen if you put a curse on your sibling but didn’t have any other magic powers.

‘Zen Classics’ DLC flippers over to XBLA’s Pinball FX2 this Wednesday

Zen Classics DLC hits Pinball FX2 on XBLA this Wednesday

Zen Studios will add four classic tables to Pinball FX2 this Wednesday. The “Zen Classics” bundle includes four “digitally re-mastered” tables, altered from their already digital state, with upgraded graphics and physics for Pinball FX2.

The four tables in the pack are Tesla (pretty great!), Shaman, Eldorado and V12. The tables come as a bundle for 800 Microsoft Points ($ 10).

Pool Nation drops into XBLA’s corner pocket on October 31

Pool Nation drops into XBLA's corner pocket on October 31

Pool Nation is a brand new billiards game by Cherry Pop Games that’s coming to the Xbox Live Arcade, and while we previously posted that it was due out sometime last week, Cherry Pop has instead confirmed it for release on October 31. That’s what the official Twitter account says, so if you were excited to break with a virtual cue already, you’ll have to wait just a few more weeks.

Pool Nation allows for online or singleplayer billards play, and will let players use slow-time, rewind, or a number of other powers while cracking the various colored balls around the table. There’s also a mode called Endurance, which tasks players with finishing the table quickly to try and earn the most money. When it does arrive, the game will be available for 800 Microsoft Points, or about $ 10.00.

Spoiler alert! “Hacker” discovers XBLA’s titles and reveals them to the public.

It seems that someone decided to spoil the XBLA fun and put a grin on our faces at the same time. User “milkybar1983″ from the NeoGAF forum seems to have done some sleuthing behind the firewalls and revealed the cover art of 36 unreleased titles, several of which haven’t even received announcements yet. Prior to that, he posted a link which contains the cover art of every Xbox Live Arcade game to date, getting close to 600 titles in total. By the wording in his posts, he admits to snooping around on Xbox.com itself.

Though it is true that these titles weren’t precisely mind-blowing secret information, I have declined to provide links to said posts, or subsequent follow-ups from other reputable sites—save for this snapshot of the main body of art exposed—because I have a difficult time encouraging this kind of unprovoked behavior. No matter how awesome some of these unnounced titles may look. If there’s more on this later, and I very much doubt Microsoft will let this go quietly, we will report any new information!

Pick a fight with XBLA’s Deals of the Week

This week on Xbox Live, you can get into a fight for cheap. And not the kinds of fights you get into with racists over chat – the kind you might actually enjoy. The XBLM Deal of the Week, active from today through Oct. 8, gives you half off Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, Street Fighter 3 Third Strike Online Edition, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, and Dungeon Fighter Live – the last one not really fitting the theme, but at least it has “Fighter” in the title.

Other deals going on this week include discounts on Activision-published games, Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition, and Fighters Uncaged for Kinect.

XBLA’s annual ‘Summer of Arcade’ promotion may be losing its steam

Gamasutra contributor Ryan Langley examines August 2012′s Xbox Live Arcade debuts and continuing successes, with charts and Leaderboard data showing the performance of titles like Dust: An Elysian Tail, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Deadlight. Microsoft’s big annual Summer of Arcade promotion for 2012 is over now, and it may have been its weakest yet, with most games seeing poor reviews and some not even hitting 10,000 players in their first week! This month we …

XBLA’s Happy Wars Will Be Free To Xbox Live Gold Members

Happy Wars, the Xbox Live Arcade online brawler, will be free to download for Xbox Live Gold members.

We saw the game at E3 this year, but this is the first we have heard about its non-existent price tag. It sounds like players will be able to buy custom items for their online avatar, which is presumably how the game hopes to make its money. Along with up to 15 versus 15 online battles, there is also a single-player campaign.

Happy Wars is scheduled for release this year. The free version of the game will only be available to Xbox Live Gold members. It's unclear how much the game will cost for Silver members.

Happy Wars to be XBLA’s first free-to-play game

Happy Wars to be XBLA's first freetoplay thing

Happy Wars, an adorable multiplayer action combat game, just got even easier to try out. Microsoft announced that it will release ToyLogic’s game as XBLA’s first for-real free-to-play game. When Happy Wars launches this “autumn,” it’ll be a free download for Xbox Live Gold users, supported by the purchase of “lavishly rendered items” to customize your character.

Microsoft has made moves toward free-to-play on XBLA before, but never quite closed the deal. Crimson Alliance seemed to be embracing a free-to-play model, but instead just had a glorified demo and “flexible” pricing. Dungeon Fighter Live is based on a F2P PC game, released on XBLA as a $ 10 purchase. Rumors had Microsoft adjusting infrastructure to support F2P last year.

Don’t be fooled by Spelunky XBLA’s quiet launch

It seems like every other week, another indie developer cites Derek Yu’s indie hit Spelunky as a huge inspiration on their work. The tomb-robbing semi-roguelike was first released in 2009 for Windows PC, and sees players journeying deeper and deeper into the ground, as enemies and traps threaten to permanently kill the hero. 2009 was also the year that Yu revealed Spelunky for Xbox Live Arcade was in the works. Now, two and half years …
