Report: Whore of the Orient faces uncertain future, studio layoffs

Whore of the Orient, the next game from the makers of L.A. Noire, looks to be in jeopardy following multiple reports of its team being laid off by Kennedy Mitchell Miller. MCV Pacific, Kotaku, and Player Attack report sources who’ve said KMM has shuttered the Whore of the Orient division; KMM absorbed the remnants of L.A. Noire developer Team Bondi in 2011.

KMM partner Doug Mitchell didn’t comment on the reports when speaking to MCV, but noted the company is still “actively pursuing the right investor to partner with” on Whore of the Orient.

Online sleuth supereroregatory dug up a blog post, now deleted, by a purported partner of a KMM staff member which indicated Warner Bros pulled out from the game in December 2012, and that any new deal with a new publisher, expected to happen this month, “would come too late.”

As Kotaku notes, KMM Interactive, the company’s games division, advertised for a Lead Engine Programmer as recently as April 5, raising doubts over the Whore of the Orient team being laid off so soon after. In any case, without a partner to invest in it, the game’s future is in doubt. If it does come out, rumors suggest the earliest we’ll see it is 2015.

Fate Of WWE Games Uncertain

THQ no longer exists as a company, and we've even learned exactly how much each of its properties and developers cost. One thing we don't know, however, is exactly what will become of the lucrative WWE license.

Wrestling blog Cageside Seats reported last month that THQ owes Vince McMahon's company $ 45 million dollars, and that the eccentric WWE chairman is "furious" about the situation (weird…he's usually so level-headed).

Rumors have been swirling today about Electronic Arts purchasing the wrestling license, but it's far from confirmed. We'll update you as soon as official word comes out.

Far Cry 3 beta future uncertain

Ubisoft may or may not delay the recently announced two-week Far Cry 3 beta. That’s the answer it when asked if the recent delay of the game itself would have any effect on the testing, which for now is scheduled for this summer.

“We are still doing our best to make that determination, but nothing is confirmed yet,” a rep for the company has told GameSpot.

The game’s slip happened just this week. It was delayed from September to November/December, depending on where you’re from.

The Future Of Devil’s Third Is Uncertain

THQ said it's having discussions with other companies regarding Devil's Third, the first post-Tecmo game from Valhalla Game Studios head Tomonobu Itagaki.

The publisher did not go into exact detail during its earnings call this afternoon. "The profitability profile for Devil's Third no longer met our internal threshold and we are currently in discussions with third parties regarding the future of this title," CEO Brian Farrell said.

THQ provided addition information on the call. “There were a couple of unforeseen events that happened in the development of Devil’s Third," Farrell explained. "One was the company that Valhalla was using for the engine went out of business so we had to assist Itagaki-san and the team with a new engine and it took a fair amount of time and cost a fair amount of money.

"There’s also been a substantial appreciation of the yen against the dollar. Those increases in development costs just reduce the profitability when we ranked all of our product releases when we underwent our restructuring; the profitability of Devil’s Third was not competitive with our other releases."

Farrell added: "We think it’s an excellent franchise. We’ve really enjoyed working with Itagaki-san. We’re going to explore other alternatives with both him and others to make sure this product comes to market."

Correction: The title of this article previously read that THQ was looking to drop the title.
