Dead Island Riptide tops the UK charts for third week running

Dead Island Riptide is the second game this year to keep the competition at bay for three weeks in a row. Despite a 55 percent drop in sales, the semi-sequel repeats the run of BioShock Infinite earlier in the year. That’s no surprise given the new releases shelves are just tumbleweeds rolling past each other.

The charts do include two (sort of) new releases, and both did well. Coming in at ninth is the physical box set of The Walking Dead, which released in North America late last year. Another latecomer to Europe is Persona 4 Arena, and distributor Zen United must be pleased with the fighter punching in at 11th.

As we said last week, you know it’s quiet season when Call of Duty’s re-gunning for the top; Black Ops 2 is now up to second place, a full six months after being released. Oh, and on the day Square Enix releases its financial results for the fiscal year, Tomb Raider makes it 10/10 – that’s ten weeks in the UK top ten. Just. Saying.

Dead Space 3 Tops NPD Charts, Xbox 360 Shows Strong Sales

The February 2013 NPD sales numbers have been
released, and EA's Dead Space 3 bests Activision's mega-shooter Black Ops II to
nab the number one spot. The Xbox 360 also enjoyed it 19th straight
month as the best-selling video game system in the U.S.

Software sales, especially at retail, were
once again sluggish. New physical sales were $ 352 million, down 27 percent from
the same month last year. While hardware sales were also down 36 percent from
2012, many systems did perform better than last month. Both Wii U and Vita had
increased sales of 40 percent and 30 percent, respectively. However, Microsoft's
Xbox 360 continued its reign of 19 months as the best-selling console on the
market with over 300,000 in sales.

Activision's Skylanders series, including all
game, accessory, and toy sales, continued to be a juggernaut, posting over $ 35
million in total good sales in February alone. According to NPD, the series has
sold over $ 600 million in merchandise and games since its launch in October
2011. This success, especially in single-character packs for Skylanders Giants,
led the video game accessories category to a 5 percent growth over last year.

Below are the top selling video games of
February 2013.

Vita tops Japanese hardware charts

The Vita topped the Media Create charts last week, an occurrence spurred by two events: the previous week’s price drop, and the launch of Soul Sacrifice. The Vita sold 63,581 units in the week ending March 10, putting it above the combined 61,008 3DSes and 3DS XLs sold in Japan, and well above the poor Wii U, which moved only 9,454 units.

Soul Sacrifice, Keiji Inafune’s super grotesque Monster Hunter-style adventure, occupies both the No. 2 and No. 10 spots on the software charts. The standalone game (and hardware bundle) accounts for 92,396 copies, and the “Kyoutou Double Pack” – which is two copies of the game – sold 22,050. Together, that means Soul Sacrifice actually outsold the No. 1 game, Hatsune Miku Project Diva F for PS3. And that’s not even counting the “Kyoutou Pack” as two copies sold each.

PS4 trailer tops YouTube’s February ad leaderboards

In unusual accolade news, this commercial compression of the PS4 reveal notched top spot in YouTube’s advert leaderboards last month. The leaderboards, as Think With Google puts it, mark “a winning combination of promotion (paid ad) and popularity (organic views).”

Usually the words YouTube and “popularity” go hand in hand with the likes of ‘cat,’ ‘Charlie bit my finger,’ and ‘Harlem Shake’ – Pepsi’s rendition came in at fifth – so in that sense it’s unusual to see a games console on such a list, even if it may mark Sony’s PS4 push more than anything. Whichever you look at it, one thing it does mean is a whole ton of eyes on these 103 seconds of new-console-ness.

January NPD: Black Ops 2 tops, DmC: Devil May Cry debuts in sixth place

Black Ops 2, Far Cry 3 and Just Dance 4 were January’s best-selling games, according to NPD sales data, with Capcom’s rebooted DmC: Devil May Cry sliding in at sixth place. As per usual, the full list of the month’s top 10 best-selling games can be found after the break.

During the five-week period running from December 30, 2012, through February 2, 2013, the combined might of the video game sales industry’s physical retail channels earned a total of $ 834.7 million, a nine percent year-over-year increase as compared with January 2011′s performance. This is the first time the industry has reported an annualized overall increase in sales in at least twelve months.

2013′s “January” is five weeks, as opposed to the traditional four, for calculation purposes. The NPD Group makes this adjustment once every six or seven years to combat data drift in its reporting, much in the same way our calendar system implements a Leap Day to correct for discrepancies between the number of days in the year, and the length of Earth’s orbit.

Therefore, January’s year-over-year increase is actually the direct result of the extended recording period. If January’s overall results are “corrected” for the additional time, the industry’s physical retail performance is actually down by 13 percent, rather than up by nine. Regardless, hardware sales in general were responsible for $ 205 million of the period’s total invoice, up four percent since last year without corrections and down 17 percent with.

Once again, the Xbox 360 was the best-selling piece of overall hardware, as it has been for the last 18 months. January was also the console’s twenty-fifth month as the leading console.

Accessories sales saw the largest development in sales, increasing by 30 percent pre-corrections and four percent post – $ 256.6 million in January of this year versus $ 198.1 million last year. Meanwhile, Software sales saw the smallest pre-correction annualized jump with $ 373.1 million for the period, which is just one percent above the segment’s earnings in 2011. After corrections, that difference drops to a 19 percent year-over-year loss.

Black Ops 2 tops UK sales charts for 2012

In the battle of soccer versus guns, guns win. At least, that’s the case in the UK, where Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 managed to claim the title of best-selling game of 2012, according to Chart-Track. FIFA 13, the latest edition of the reliable sales powerhouse, managed to clock in at number 2. The top five was rounded out by Assassin’s Creed 3, Halo 4 and Hitman: Absolution, respectively. As MCV points out, all five of 2012′s best sellers were released in either November or December, meaning they accrued their impressive sales in less than two months on the market.

Other notable titles included Far Cry 3 at number 7, Borderlands 2 at 10, Mass Effect 3 at 11, Need for Speed: Most Wanted at 13, Max Payne 3 at 19 and Sleeping Dogs at 20.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 tops in UK, Hitman: Absolution debuts in second

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 maintained its top spot on the UK charts, despite a sales drop of 81 percent. However, when you’re the fourth largest game launch of all time in the UK, you’ve likely got a decent buffer. Chart-Track also noted sales are actually up 15 percent from last year’s Call of Duty installment, Modern Warfare 3, during its second week.

Hitman: Absolution debuted respectably in second. Comparing premiere weeks, Absolution outsold Hitman: Blood Money, Agent 47′s previous adventure from back in 2006, by almost threefold.

Other new entries further down the chart are Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale at 34, 35 and 38, respectively. Punch past the break for the UK top ten.

Halo 4 tops UK charts with weaker sales than previous installments

Newsbrief: The long-awaited Halo 4 debuted at the top of the UK sales charts last week, although it didn’t manage to beat week-one sales for previous top-sellers Halo 3 and Halo: Reach. The latest title in the Halo series pushed last week’s number one, Assassin’s Creed III, down to number two with a 73 percent drop in sales week-over-week. With Call of Duty: Black Ops II arriving this week at retail, it’s safe to assume …
