Command & Conquer’s Closed Beta Starts This Summer

Free-to-play RTS Command & Conquer is starting its closed beta program this summer in advance of its 2013 release.

The game features dozens of generals (each with their own units, strategies, etc.) spread over the game's three factions. With that many generals, a closed beta sounds like a great idea to get all the balancing correct.

The E3 trailer below gives you a taste of a few of the leaders' personalities.

Ken Levine starts writing his next game

Ken Levine starts writing his next game

Since shipping Irrational Games’ opus BioShock Infinite in March, creative director Ken Levine is already hard at work penning the script to his next game. Levine began crafting his next work earlier today, he confirmed on Twitter.

When asked by a fan what inspires him, Levine rattled off a list of authors, films and television shows, running the gamut from composer Stephen Sondheim to the works of the Coen brothers, Steven Soderbergh and Stanley Kubrick. Levine also referenced the Don Draper chronicles, Mad Men. Of course, these are just works that inspire him; not necessarily the works that will directly inspire Irrational Games’ next project, whatever that may be.

Former Human Head COO starts new studio Grimm Bros.

Image

Grimm Bros. is a new studio being formed by Prey 2 (a game currently in limbo) developer Human Head‘s former Chief Operating Officer Ash Monif, with artist Randis Albion taking on the role of art director. The developer plans on taking Grimm fairy tales and mixing them with the “humor of Monty Python and the darkness of Evil Dead” in an RPG.

“I grew up reading the classics like Grimm, Chaucer, Tolkien – and I feel that today’s games gloss over a lot of the richness that can be found within these great works,” said Monif. “Our goal is to create classic and immersive RPG and adventure games, set in a persistent world for a community of core gamers.”

The studio has started work on its first game, which it plans to announce at next week’s Game Developers Conference.

EA co-founder Joe Ybarra starts new studio, already planning a Kickstarter

EA cofounder starts new studio, already planning a Kickstarter

Joe Ybarra, co-founder of Electronic Arts – who worked on the very first Madden, among other things – has opened a new studio, Joe Got Game.

The studio’s first project will be Shackleton Crater. Named after a real crater on the moon, the turn-based strategy game sees players building and maintaining a lunar colony. “Using research and real lunar data from space agencies around the world,” Shackelton Crater promises to offer a realistic representation of what an actual lunar colony might be like (just look at the game’s bibliography).

As GamesIndustry.biz points out, the Joe Got Game website mentions a Kickstarter campaign, though it doesn’t appear to be live yet. Shackelton Crater is aiming for a spring 2014 debut on tablets and PC.

Ex-Zynga Boston Team Starts New Studio

The original team from Zynga Boston is announcing plans for a new iOS title from their newly-formed game development studio.

Five senior members of the Boston Zynga team put together the game development studio, Proletariat Inc. with hopes of creating quality game products with a high-level of entertainment value.

These senior members showcase resumes with such titles as Guitar Hero and Lord of the Rings Online.

"We have all known each other and worked with one another for so long that we’ve developed an organic way of making games together,” says CEO Seth Sivak. “We all want to make successful games, both creatively and as a business. This team has been on both sides and knows how to find that balance."

Sivak mentions that the team is almost ready to release their iOS game, Letter Rush.

Letter Rush will be the first game released by Proletariat Inc. and will be available next week.
