80s and Dubstep Sound Packs Heading To Sound Shapes

Sounds Shapes is getting more DLC in the form of Sound Packs later this month. The official Sound Shapes Twitter account is teasing a May 14 release date for the Sound Packs. The nature of the packs actually leaked online when they were accidentally released in Asia last month, and Trophy details leaked early as well.

For more on Sound Shapes, you can check out our review, as well as our impressions of the last batch of DLC, the Car Mini-Album & Creator Pack and Community Milkcrate.

Sound Shapes lays down more DLC on May 14 in NA, May 15 EU

Sound Shapes, Queasy Games’s synesthetic platformer, gets another batch of DLC on May 14 in North America, May 15 in Europe. While Queasy’s announcement was coy, PSNStores says it’s confirmed the DLC comprises two sound packs: one 1980s-themed, one dubstep.

As PSNStores notes, the two DLCs packs accidentally appeared in a PS Store update for Asia back in March, and their trophies are listed too. The 80s are back in style and dubstep isn’t going away anytime soon, so the timing looks metronomic for some new beats.

This is what the Xbox 360 Achievement sound looks like

This is what the Xbox 360 achievement sound looks like
Whenever you hear that “boop-boop” drop-chime of Achievement on the Xbox 360, picture this floating, green jellyfish-like image, because that’s what it looks like. This is according to design company Born of Sound, which makes noises into “sound-forms,” or physical art.

Sound Shapes: Car Mini-Album & Creator Pack and Community Milkcrate Impressions

Sound Shapes is one of Sony’s secret weapons. You can’t get this innovative music platforming experience on a system that doesn’t have a Sony logo on it, and its impressive user-creation tools ensure it always has a plethora of fresh content waiting for you every time you boot it up.

Since its release in August last year, Queasy Games has provided a few new downloadable creation tools for players, but this is the first time it has added new levels to the game. The new mini album, which is called “Do You Wheelie Want to Hurt Me,” adds three new levels, introduces two vehicles to the platforming mix, and of course features new music. As with all Sound Shapes content, purchasing the DLC once gives you access to it on both the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions of the game.

The vehicles are best described as motorcycles. They have the same controls, but the skull-shaped one automatically kills you if you land upside-down. You can’t hop, or stick to walls while riding in the vehicles like you can on foot. Instead, you use your boost and the shoulder buttons to rotate as you fly off the ramps arranged throughout the levels.

The new music isn’t particularly memorable, with the second level having heavy-metal leanings that are accompanied by the roaring engine of your skull-shaped vehicle. Even as a fan of the metal genre, it can be a little grating when you get stuck and have to hear certain loops repeatedly, but overall the new music stands next to the previous albums’ high quality.

Sound Shapes feels much different when you’re controlling a vehicle, jumping off ramps, and speeding through musical notes as fast as you can. Sound Shapes is not a rhythm game (even though it has rhythm and music in it), but the vehicles make it feel like one as you try to speed through the levels without stopping. The levels have a much greater sense of speed than the originals, but can come crashing to a halt when you’re trying to get that oddly placed note.

Sound Shapes’ campaign was disappointingly short, and “Do You Wheelie Want to Hurt Me” is no different. Of the three new levels, one purely trains you how to control the vehicles. The other two can be completed in less than five minutes apiece. What we originally believed to be a batch of developer-created levels is more of a training ground for level creators who want to use the new vehicles, objects, and sounds. I enjoyed the vehicles, but it’s up to the community to put them to good use.

The best new Sound Shapes content is the Community Milkcrate, which is a separate and free download that appears when you update the game. The Milkcrate offers a meaty selection of 6 albums and 35 levels handpicked by Queasy Games as some of the best the community has to offer. They aren’t quite as good as the main campaign levels, but amateur builders completed them with pre-existing assets so it’s hard to be too judgmental. Despite the design restrictions, the community has created some great levels, many of which last longer than the entire “Do You Wheelie Want to Hurt Me” mini-album. The levels also include brief liner notes from the creators outlining their thoughts on the design process.

Overall, Queasy Games’ new Sound Shapes offering disappoints. The $ 1.99 car mini-album and creator pack is essentially a training ground for budding level designers interested in using the vehicles, and though the free Community Milkcrate collection of user-created levels is nice, I wish the developer spent more time creating levels designed around the new vehicles.

Sound Shapes DLC Adds New Levels, Community Highlights, And A Vehicle

Sound Shapes is getting its most substantial DLC yet with new levels, new editing tools, a collection of community highlights, and a vehicle that looks like it will change the gameplay dramatically.

The Car Mini-Album & Creator Pack will be $ 1.99 and it will add new campaign levels, new creation tools and sounds, more Beat School Lessons, and Trophies.

The Community Milkcrate will be free and it adds six albums worth of the best community created levels, along with notes from the creators.

All of this DLC should be available a little bit later this afternoon.

Sound Shapes DLC throws down cars, campaigns, obstacles, more

Sound Shapes wants to pump up the volume today with a few downloadable additions, first with the Car Mini-Album and Creator Pack, which runs $ 2 and adds two new vehicles, new levels, a Sound Pack, new editing options, Beat School lessons and trophies.

The Community Milkcrate includes six new albums and a total of 35 levels created by players just like you (but probably with more dedication to Sound Shapes level creation), hand-picked by the developers at Queasy Games. The Community Milkcrate is a free update, and so is the addition of offline play – sync levels while connected to the Sound Shapes servers, and then play those levels whether on- or offline.

Queasy teased this massive DLC and update back in February, noting that it is Cross Buy enabled, and kept successfully silent until now. For a game called Sound Shapes, that’s no easy feat.

Pulse: A game where sound reveals the world

We like Pulse, an independent project and IGF finalist from Team Pixel Pi, for a couple of reasons. One, the main character is blind, and the only way to reveal the world around him is through sound. Two, the primary way to create these sounds is to throw adorable critters called Mokos around the environment.

As has been proven before, there are few things more satisfying than flinging adorable critters against solid objects. Doing so “illuminates” the world, so to speak, giving the player an idea of their surroundings. It’s pretty neat, but you don’t have to take our word for it, as a free prototype is available now for both Windows and Mac. We should also mention that, occasionally, you feed Mokos to slavering monsters (only out of necessity, of course).

Team PixelPi is currently seeking funding for Pulse on Kickstarter, with the ultimate goal of $ 75,000. The game will be on display at the IGF Pavillion at GDC, and you can bet we’ll be checking it out.

Sound Shapes patched with next DLC, allows offline community levels

Sound Shapes gets patch on DLC day, allows offline community play

When the Sound Shapes DLC drops on March 12 – whatever it may entail – it will launch alongside a patch for the game, PSN Stores reports. The patch will add the ability to download community levels and play them offline, a handy trick for anyone with a wifi-only Vita and who enjoys the multitude of user-created levels in the Sound Shapes universe.

The Sound Shapes DLC will support Cross Buy, meaning a purchase on Vita transfers to your PS3 version of the game, and vice versa. Sony will release more information about the DLC itself “soon.

Sound Shapes Gets More Beats On March 12

Sound Shapes is still one of Sony's best titles for PS Vita, and we can't wait to platform our way through more songs. Fortunately, we will only have to wait until March 12 for Sounds Shapes next batch of DLC.

Developer Queasy Games recently tweeted about the upcoming DLC. Unfortunately, they didn't give any actually information other than a date. The game's Facebook page says to expect “New beats and a new way to play!” Thankfully this DLC will be Cross-Buy enabled so you won't have to buy it again for PS3. Hopefully, more information will be forthcoming shortly.
