Windows 8 sells over 100 million copies

Over 100 million individuals have purchased Windows 8 licenses from Microsoft in roughly six months.

Tami Reller, co-head of Microsoft’s Windows division, told Reuters an OS update is due by the end of the year, code-named Windows Blue. “We’ve considered a lot of different scenarios to help traditional PC users move forward as well as making usability that much better on all devices,” she said. One thing the update will do is make Windows 8 more friendly to smaller tablets, such as seven and eight-inch models.

Reller couldn’t say exactly what would be in the update, nor could she confirm if Microsoft would manufacturer a smaller version of its Surface tablet. In the first quarter of 2013, Microsoft has sold 900,000 Surface tablets, compared to 19.5 million iPads and 8.8 million Samsung tablets.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition sells 10 million, Mojang plans major additions

Minecraft Pocket Edition sells 10 million, Mojang plans major additions

Mojang announced that the mobile version of its runaway hit, Minecraft, surpassed 10 million units in sales, and revealed that it will add several major features to the game in the coming months.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition‘s forthcoming updates range from matters of convenience (players will no longer have to exit to the main menu in order to change settings) to experimental additions that, initially, will be available exclusively to players using high-end mobile devices. Once these unnamed features are sufficiently tested, they will be rolled out in another update for all players.

Mojang is also working on Minecraft Realms, a cloud-based multiplayer service that allows players to collaborate on shared projects without needing to be online at the same time. Minecraft Realms will be launched as a subscription-based mode that can be unlocked in Minecraft: Pocket Edition via an in-app purchase.

Mojang hopes to launch its next Minecraft: Pocket Edition update by the end of May.

Report: Dead Space 4 canceled after Dead Space 3 sells below targets

EA is effectively bringing an end to the Dead Space series after canning Dead Space 4 in pre-production, VideoGamer reports. According to the site, who spoke to an anonymous source familiar with the unannounced project, the publisher terminated the development of Dead Space 4 in light of Dead Space 3 failing to achieve its sales targets.

VideoGamer’s source claims EA executives informed Visceral Montreal last month of the cancelation along with details of the company’s restructuring plans. Two weeks ago, EA did announce layoffs at its studios in Los Angeles and Montreal. The source also claims Dead Space 3 “was almost canceled” mid-development, and that EA told Visceral to bring in a wider audience than previous series entries did by focusing more on action than horror.

EA believed Dead Space 3 could comfortably outsell its predecessors, with company CEO John Riccitiello saying he could see the game selling 5 million units. EA announced Dead Space 3 pre-orders were “outpacing” those for Dead Space 2 in January’s earnings call, although the publisher didn’t disclose by what margin.

We’ve reached out to EA for comment.

Sony sells DeNA shares for $438M

Sony expects operating profit this year, but not from selling product

Sony is getting rid of all its shares in Japanese mobile portal DeNA for $ 438 million. Reuters reports the company is selling the shares to Nomura Securities. The income from the sale will be posted in Sony’s fourth quarter financials.

This all ties into Sony’s announcement in February that it would end its fiscal year in March with an operating profit, which was quite the surprise given the state of the company. The company has recently experienced billion-dollar cash infusions through the sale of its Sony City Osaki and its New York HQ buildings.

Wii Mini sells 35,700 units in Canada across first two months

If you’re wondering who would buy a Wii Mini, the answer is 35,700 Canadians – so far. Speaking to Nintendo World Report, Nintendo of Canada revealed the wee Wii’s sales numbers up to January 31, which represent approximately the first two months’ worth.

“The Canadian market has reacted positively to the great value the system has to offer,” Nintendo of Canada communication manager Matt Ryan told Nintendo World Report, “and we are seeing this reflected in the sales numbers.”

The miniature console, cheaper than its big brother but at the cost of internet connectivity and GameCube compatibility, is coming to the UK and other European countries later this month, but there’s no news as yet of a release in the US.

Sony sells Tokyo office building for $1.2 billion

Sony sells Tokyo office building for $ 12billion

Sony announced its second sale of major offices in as many months today, the company offloading its Tokyo-based Sony City Osaki building for ¥111 billion (around $ 1.2 billion). Following last month’s sale of its US headquarters for $ 1.1 billion, Sony entered the Osaki building and its premises into a trust, then sold the trust’s beneficiary rights to Nippon Building Fund inc. and an unnamed “Japanese institutional investor” in a 60/40 split.

Sony stated the sale was part of the company’s reorganization of assets to “strengthen its corporate structure.” Then again, the ¥41 billion (around $ 4.4 billion) raised in operating income by the sale and how it’ll help Sony turn an operating profit this fiscal year helps too. The company wants to bring an end to four successive years of losses, including last fiscal year’s loss of around $ 820 million, not to mention the humiliation of Fitch Ratings cutting the company’s credit rating to junk status.

While the sale represents another major shift for the company in a year of nothing but, Sony and other Sony Group businesses are to remain in the City Osaki building for five further years under a separate lease agreement.
