Konami reports year-over-year losses, strength in social games

Konami 2013 financial results report strength in social games, losses in pachinko

Konami has released details of its financial performance in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, reporting sizable year-on-year losses in its digital entertainment and pachinko divisions but growth in its social gaming sector.

Company product sales and service revenue for the year amounted to ¥226 billion ($ 2.4B), down 15 percent from its earnings of ¥266 billion last year. Net income sank to ¥13.2 billion ($ 140M), a decrease of 42.8% compared to last year’s reported income of ¥23 billion.

Konami saw its largest losses in the pachinko sector, in which revenue fell more than 70 percent compared to last year. The company’s Digital Entertainment division reported a loss of 17.1 percent in year-on-year revenue, though solid worldwide performances for titles like Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance boosted earnings.

Konami’s finances are buoyed by the success of Metal Gear Solid Social Ops and another popular online game, Dragon Collection, which it operates in partnership with Japanese social networking service GREE. Konami’s social games currently boast more than 35 million registered users worldwide.

Sega Sammy sees losses in gaming sector, StarHorse3 sales continue unabated

Sega Sammy Holdings is a massive, ginormous company; one with more fingers in more entertainment pies than you can shake a stick at, to mix our metaphors. It makes everything from pachislot machines to whatever “StarHorse3 Season Ⅰ A NEW LEGEND BEGINS” (above) is, but what we’re most interested in are, you know, video games. Specifically, how Sega Sammy’s “Consumer Business” segment did during the first quarter of this fiscal year.

Not great, as it turns out, but not as not great as last year. The Consumer Business division posted an operating loss of ¥1.559 billion for the three month period ending on June 30, but that’s actually up 59 percent from the ¥3.856 billion loss reported for the same period last year. Consumer Business shipped a total of 1.3 million units during Q1, with more units shipping to Europe (700,000) than to the US, Japan and elsewhere combined (400,000 and 230,000 respectively).

Sega Sammy on the whole, however, is doing pretty well, ending the quarter in the black to the tune of ¥2.544 billion — a massive increase over the ¥2.224 billion loss the company reported last year. Honestly, we think it’d do wonders for Sega Sammy’s bottom line if they’d start selling those convertible horse racing loveseats on their own, or license out the design to movie theaters.

Nintendo is confident in the performance of the handheld for the rest of this fiscal year, however, forecasting that the 3DS …
