New Avengers Game Kicks Off Partnership Between Square Enix And Marvel

After years of working with a diverse array of publishers like Activision, Capcom, and Telltale, Marvel is adding a new partnership to its stable. Today the company announced a new deal with Square Enix to create triple-A games from the Marvel franchises, starting with The Avengers.

Square Enix is tapping two of its most accomplished Western developers for the project, with logos for Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) and Eidos Montreal (Deux Ex: Mankind Divided, Thief) both appearing in the teaser trailer. The teaser doesn't reveal any gameplay, but sends the strong suggestion that the first game features Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America, the latter two who eventually spearhead factions in the Civil War dust-up.

The Square Enix press release says, "The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come."

The Avengers is just the first of a multi-game partnership. Square Enix says we can expect more information on the projects, including The Avengers, in 2018.

Our Take
Seeing heavy hitters like Crystal Dynamics get a chance to work on Marvel properties is exciting for fans of the comics and films. We wonder what this means for the future of both Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. While Tomb Raider continues to perform well, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided struggled to gain traction with gamers despite generally favorable reviews.

Elder Scrolls Online New Life Festival Kicks Off Today

The Elder Scrolls Online is marking the holidays with a special event called the New Life Festival, which begins this morning and runs through January 4.

To participate, find the character Breda outside of Windhelm. She'll give you a quest called "The New Life Festival." Once that's done, you'll be able to complete up to nine daily holiday quests, one for each of Tamriel's races. Each quest will reward you with a New Life gift box, which each contain a random crafting material, a consumable New Life memento, a skinchanger style item, and one of a selection of special New Life items.

New holiday-themed items will be available for purchase in the Crown Store throughout the event.

For the full details, check out the announcement on the official site.

Our Take
Tis the season for special events! Some of Tamriel's holiday activities sound kind of dangerous, though. I could probably handle the Snow Bear Plunge, but no way am I doing the Lava Foot Stomp.

Sega Kicks Off Fiscal Year With Strong Sales Thanks To Total War: Warhammer

It might not be a hit in Japan, but the rest of the world is fawning over Creative Assembly’s blend of Total War and Games Worskhop’s Warhammer. The May release of Total War: Warhammer helped push a 55 percent increase in video game sales over the same quarter last year.

Total company sales climbed to ¥70.6 billion ($ 693.9 million) for the quarter, up 33 percent year-over-year. Operating income was in the positive ¥3 billion ($ 29.5 million) against a loss of ¥9.4 billion ($ 92.4 million) in the same quarter last year.

The results of those improvements brought net profits into the black ¥4.1 billion (440.3 million). Last year saw a net loss of ¥7.9 billion ($ 77.6 million).

With the recent acquisition of Amplitude, developer of the Endless franchise, Sega is looking to establish itself as a strategy powerhouse. The publisher adds that studio to its existing duo of Relic and Creative Assembly.

The remainder of Sega’s year includes Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X, Persona 5, Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, and Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice. In addition to its video game business, Sega saw gains in its pachislot/pachinko business and its resorts.

Our Take
Sega is smart to build itself a firm foothold in strategy gaming. It’s assembled a trio of smart studios that approach the genre in different ways that complement without cannibalizing sales. With Atlus, the publisher also has a smart, stable RPG house that continues to successfully deliver titles that many other companies would avoid.

Minecraft Battle Kicks Off Console Mini-Game Support Next Month

Hunger has long been a part of the Minecraft experience. Hunger Games on the other hand, is something PC modders have added on their own. Console players can get a similar experience with the first Minecraft mini-game, Battle.

I recently had the chance to give Battle a try, and while I wasn’t blown away by the demo, the framework has potential. Minecraft Battle will launch with three free maps on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in June. Included in the preview were a gorgeous pirate cove, a large cave with an open (and deadly) expanse in the center, and a deadly, lava-filled arena.

More packs will be added for $ 2.99 as time goes on. These eight-player matches are single-elimination, supporting up to four-player splitscreen. You’ll have opportunity at the beginning to look for weapons, armor, and potions in chests, during which time you can’t be harmed.

Chests will refresh after a while, so if you miss out in the early phase of the match, you can hang back while your opponents take each other out. Combat is my least favorite part of Minecraft, and the rules weren’t conveyed well. I also noticed some significant problems with the bow that caused nearly a full second of lag between releasing the string and the arrow firing. The version I played was unfinished, so this may very well be fixed by June.

There’s no crafting during this mode, so you can’t hide yourself in a corner of the map and build up your supplies. That might be added in the future. There’s also no support for custom-crafted arenas off the bat. Again, Mojang is keeping an ear open for community suggestions.

I’m glad Battle is launching for free, as it’s definitely not something that will click with all players. However for those that do dig in, a growing roster of paid maps and cutthroat competition might serve as a pleasant diversion from building homes and dodging Creepers.
