Altered Beast 3D coming to eShop in Japan

Altered Beast is about to wise fwom its gwave on 3DS. Sega has announced that Altered Beast 3D will arrive on the eShop next week in Japan, bringing with it several new features, according to Tiny Cartridge. Like the Japanese eShop re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast 3D will include both the Japanese and western versions of the game, button remapping and an optional mode that emulates CRT monitors.

None of Sega’s 3DS re-releases have been confirmed for a North American release, including Space Harrier, Super Hang-On, Sonic the Hedgehog and, now, Altered Beast. Tiny Cartridge does note, however, that Space Harrier was recently confirmed for Europe, so there may be hope the game will be added to North America’s growing Sega eShop library.

Report Remastered iFinal Fantasy VIIIi coming to PC in Japan

[Rough translation of the above dialogue: "...whatever."]

The ever-sullen Squall and his friends are set to make a high-resolution return, as Famitsu reports that Square Enix is developing a remastered PC version of Final Fantasy VIII.

Final Fantasy VIII was originally released for the PlayStation in 1999, and PC players saw a no-frills Windows port one year later. News of Final Fantasy VIII‘s forthcoming rerelease follows up on last year’s upgraded PC port of Final Fantasy VII, which added cloud saving and unlockable achievements. While the new version of Final Fantasy VIII boasts a graphical update, no further details are known, and a release date has not been announced.

Sony Japan Teases New ‘Panopticon’ Project

Sony has posted a trailer for an upcoming game, currently going by the name Panopticon. The title, in development from the company's Japan Studio, looks to merge cybernetics, dragon mechs, and a dystopian future.

There's a lot to soak in here. Perhaps most interesting are the countdown timers that appear around characters. It's likely that they're measuring life expectancy from birth, and are updated based on a person's behavior and activities. If that's the case, they're a natural fit for gaming.

There's no word on what platform the game is coming to, either. The trailer promises more information on May 21, which happens to be the same date that Microsoft is hosting its next Xbox event. In the meantime, check it out.

Metallic Red 3DS, Eevee 3DS XL evolving in Japan

Metallic Red 3DS, Eevee 3DS XL evolving in Japan

In Japan-always-seems-to-have-the-coolest-3DS-skins news, the country’s getting a new Metallic Red 3DS as well as – and we admit we’re particularly jealous of this one – a very limited edition 3DS XL skin based on Eevee, the adorable critter from the Pokémon series.

The striped 3DS XL, which rather resembles 1960s wallpaper, was spotted by Hachima being advertized in one of Japan’s official Pokémon Center stores. Like last year’s Charizard 3DS XL, the ¥18,900 system ($ 185) is only available via reservations, which then go into a lottery to win the chance to buy the system. In other words, this is one of those times when the words ‘limited edition’ genuinely apply. The lottery is being held until June 3.

More freely available is the Metallic Red 3DS below, which will be released for ¥15,000 ($ 147) on June 13. Like the Light Blue and Gloss Pink models announced earlier this year, it includes a 4GB SD card.

Report: Killer is Dead lives on August 1 in Japan

Killer is Dead will slice up Japanese Xbox 360s and PS3s starting on August 1, according to Japanese site Hokanko-Alt. The site reports that the info comes courtesy of the latest issue of Dengeki Playstation. The game is also slated to arrive in Europe this August, though the North American launch is still a more nebulous “Summer 2013.”

The latest from Grasshoper Manufacture and Kadokawa Games stars an elite assassin with a robot arm who hunts down and kills criminals. He also moonlights as a gigolo, apparently.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog rolls onto 3DS eShop in Japan this week

3D Sonic the Hedgehog rolls onto 3DS eShop in Japan this week

A 3D-enhanced version of Sonic the Hedgehog spins its way onto Japan’s 3DS eShop on May 15. As Tiny Cartridge reports, the latest of Sega’s 3D portable reworks has some interesting additions, including optional spin dashes, button remapping, and being able to choose either the Japanese or western version of the game.

You’d think that last one would indicate an impending western arrival, but we’re still waiting on the 3D-enhanced versions of Space Harrier and Super Hang-On. We’ve reached out to Sega to find out what, if anything, is on the horizon.
