Microsoft: Xbox One isn’t always online, but requires internet connection

Microsoft Xbox One isn't always online, but requires internet connection

Xbox One, Microsoft’s next-gen console, does not require users to be constantly connected to the internet, but it does require an internet connection, a Q&A post on Xbox Wire said. The post itself has since been removed.

The answer said the Xbox One “does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet.”

Developers are able to use Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service with Xbox One – this could potentially shift certain computations to the cloud and require players to be online, even for single-player runs, Wired reports.

For pre-owned games, the Xbox One is designed “to enable customers to trade in and resell games,” Microsoft said in the same Q&A post, promising more details later.

All games can be installed to the Xbox One’s 500GB hard drive, removing the need for a disc entirely after the initial load-up, Microsoft tells Wired. If a second account wants to play that game the player will be asked to pay a fee and install the game on his own console. Whether this is a mandatory installation for every game, Microsoft says, “On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play.”

Report: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 15 isn’t happening

Tiger Woods PGA Tour is going to sit the next round out, according to sources speaking to Kotaku. The site has been informed by folks with knowledge of the series that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 15 – which was to be outsourced – isn’t happening in the wake of EA CEO John Riccitiello’s departure. An in-house team will work for the next two years to make Tiger Woods 16 and take advantage of next generation systems.

EA responded: “We don’t comment on speculation about our franchises. We have nothing to announce today about future games on the Tiger Woods PGA Tour franchise. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 is now available on PS3 and Xbox 360.”

An EA Sports representative also tells us the company will be delivering patches this week to fix known issues with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14.

The Tiger Woods brand has hit a rough patch these past few years. EA reaffirmed its relationship with Woods in 2010 despite the golfer’s penchant for putting around. Later that same year EA did note it’d like to see the golfer winning to make their relationship worthwhile. But, here’s the hard truth: As much as EA may want to move on from Tiger, um, name another golfer…

Criterion creative director indicates he isn’t working on a racing game

Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Burnout Paradise developer Criterion looks to be expanding beyond the racing game genre. Studio creative director and VP Alexander Ward responded yesterday to recent speculation about a new Need for Speed: Underground game, ruling out any impending announcements of either that or a new Burnout – or at least ones that involve himself.

This morning, Ward tweeted “The key word was ‘personally’….#tothefuture #weseefarther,” underlining that some of the comments he made were only in reference to himself. His tweet may imply Criterion has separate teams working on separate games – Ward said only nine months ago the Need for Speed series was “definitely a Criterion gig” now.

“Here is what I want folks to know,” Ward wrote yesterday. “Some folks are eternally disappointed. Nothing I can do about that. So many tweets asking for new Burnout. Equally many tweets asking for a new NFS game from us. Also Road Rash. Whilst I love all of those games, I am personally not doing any.”

“After over a decade of making racing games it’s time to make something new. It is early days thus I have nothing to ‘announce’ or talk about,” Ward continued. However, he certainly didn’t sever his own ties with the genre, later saying, “I am proud of all of the Burnout games. When it feels right we will make another one. We are creative people.”
