Xbox One Won’t Separate Games Into Live Arcade, Indie, And Retail Categories

On the Xbox One, all games are equal.

Microsoft's Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer spoke with Eurogamer, and clarified a question we had about the distribution of games on Microsoft's newly announced consoles. "In the past we had retail games which came on disc, we had Xbox Live Arcade and we had Indie Games, and they had their own discrete channels or discrete silos. With Xbox One and the new marketplace, they're games," Spencer said, "We don't make a distinction between whether a game is a 50-hour RPG epic or whether it is a puzzle game or whether it is something that fits halfway between the two."

Spencer continued by speaking towards how this new lack of compartmentalization will help independent developers saying, "I think we solve fantastically some of the challenges that independent developers face, particularly around discovery and connecting their game to an audience, by some of the platform features we have in the machine itself."

BlazBlue Alter Memory transplants the game into anime

BlazBlue Alter Memory transplants the game into anime

Finally, the complex and compelling story of BlazBlue is getting the anime treatment with BlazBlue Alter Memory. According to Anime News Network, the story centers on Ragna the Bloodedge – you might know him as “humongous sword guy” – and the ragtag gang of pugilists determined to collect the bounty on his head. Somehow, a fox lady, a little vampire girl and a weird, anthropomorphic cat person figure in there as well.

BlazBlue Alter Memory is set to launch this fall.

Mega Man 5 OST busts into the Capcom Store

Mega Man 5 OST busts into the Capcom Store

The original soundtrack for Mega Man 5 is now available for $ 8.95 on Capcom’s official shop; it’s almost as if they planned its release to coincide with the debut of Mega Man 5 on the 3DS Virtual Console. What a weird coincidence!

At 57 hot jams long, Mega Man 5‘s soundtrack was composed by Mari Yamaguchi, who was often credited mononymously (as “Mari”) for her work at Capcom. She also composed the music for Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts and several of the songs on the Breath of Fire soundtrack, in addition to handling arrangement duties for the TurboGrafx-16 version of Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition. Yamaguchi returned to the Mega Man franchise in 2010, penning the stage theme for Mega Man 10‘s Sheep Man.

EA Wades Into MOBA Pool With Dawngate

EA's always been a company that seems to follow the crowd,
and now it's set its sights on the popular MOBA genre.

MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas), which have their
roots in a Warcraft III mod called Defense of the Ancients (DotA), have become
one of the most profitable genres in recent years, with games like League of
Legends boasting millions of active players daily.

Now EA has launched a website for a MOBA game that hasn't
even been officially announced. Entitled Dawngate, the game's description on
the site reads: "Dawngate is a new MOBA, built
from the ground up to look and feel familiar while offering a whole new way to
experience MOBA gameplay. Dawngate empowers you to forge the champions you love
for the roles you want in a competitive arena, shaped by ever-evolving,
community-driven content and story."

On the site, you can register
for the game's beta. The game is developed by Waystone Games, which is likely a
newly formed studio, as there is little information about the company online.

Anno Online sails into open beta

Anno Online in open beta

Ubisoft’s Anno Online has opened the city gates for an open beta, granting all access to the free-to-play city building strategy game. Interested lords and ladies should set course to anno-online.com for access. New players logging in during the first week of the open beta will receive a “premium ship.” Players who participated in the closed beta will receive several rewards. The greatest gift? Their data won’t be wiped per the standard beta transition, so they can continue on.

Based on Anno 1404 (previously known as Dawn of Discovery in the States), Anno Online has players build and develop a medieval city, support the population and develop trade routes. Anno Online will also add a guild system sometime this month for players to cooperate with friends.

Every new trailer for Rayman Legends is bittersweet. On one hand, each gorgeous example is a reminder of how much we're looking forward to playing it. On the other, it's a reminder that we were supposed to have the game in hand already.

In this latest trailer, Rayman and friends venture off a turtle's back and under the sea for some mischief. You'll be able to try this out for yourself when Ubisoft delivers the game into our eager hands (finally) on September 3, 2013, on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U. Into the Dead, endless zombie shooter for mobile, hits 10 million

Into the Dead, endless zombie shooter for mobile, gets 10 million hits

Mobile games may not all reach the same level of fame as retail or desktop counterparts, but the market is strong, producing games that sell millions more than some of our favorites and support entire teams of developers. Into the Dead from mobile publisher PikPok, for example, just passed 10 million downloads across iOS and Android devices, after five months on the market.

Into the Dead is an endless runner combined with a shooter, all set in the zombie apocalypse. It’s free on iOS and Android, but a no-ad version of the game is available for $ 2 as an in-app purchase. And now for a thought experiment: If only 10 percent of players purchase the ad-free game, that’s $ 2,000,000. Not bad for a 5-month-old.

If you want to bring Into the Dead to 10,000,001 downloads, head to the App Store or Google Play. Another PikPok game to pass 10 million downloads is Flick Kick Football. The Flick Kick series has clocked in more than 20 million downloads.
