Making Halo 4: A story about triple-A

Neill Blomkamp would still like to do that Halo movie, if given control

Even though Neill Blomkamp already put five months of work into the stalled Halo film project, he’s not bitter. In fact, he’s still down to work on the film – that is, if he’s in control.

“I still really love the world and the universe and the mythology of Halo. If I was given control, I would really like to do that film,” Blomkamp told IGN. “But that’s the problem. When something pre-exists, there’s this idea of my own interpretation versus 150 other people involved with the film’s interpretation of the same intellectual property. Then the entire filmgoing audience has their interpretation. You can really live up to or fail in their eyes. That part isn’t appealing to me, but the original pieces are appealing.”

Blomkamp went on record back in 2009 to say that he wouldn’t do the Halo film, even if it was offered to him. Blomkamp drew attention for his trio of Halo 3 short films, eventually all collected in Halo 3: Landfall. The Halo movie was officially postponed in late 2006 after Fox and Universal both pulled out of the project.

Microtransactions Could Be Coming to Halo Series

The topic of microtransactions is a hot one, and Halo 4 executive producer Dan Ayoub says that his team has had their eye on them. Citing the success of Gears of War's cosmetic skins, Ayoub told Digital Spy that, "Halo certainly has the potential for those kinds of things."

Microtransactions have been in the news recently, with EA making waves after telling Morgan Stanley conference attendees that all of their upcoming games would include them. This statement was later clarified, but it shined a light on growing discontent with the practice when incorporated in full-priced titles. The nickel-and-dime approach tempered enthusiasm for a number of Dead Space devotees, since the third entry in the franchise ramped up their inclusion.

Were Halo to incorporate small, cosmetic items in the way that Gears of War does, there would be no impact on game play (other than that one glowing guy making himself a target on the battlefield). Provided there are no perks, more powerful weapons, or ability unlocks that disrupt matchmaking, it's hard to argue with microtransactions. While Ayoub is otherwise quiet on the subject, don't be surprised if that flaming helmet you love will cost you in the next Halo title.

Halo 4 getting new Forge Island map for free on April 11

New Halo 4 map

343 Industries has announced at PAX East this weekend that Halo 4 is getting a new Forge map, with plenty of blank, open canvas for Halo level makers to paint their creativity on. As you can see in the quick video on IGN’s page, “Forge Island” actually has three different islands of varying size, all completely flat and round, to give map makers lots of room to build whatever they want.

The map will also come with some new Forge pieces, which the developers have already used to build a copy of Hang ‘Em High. 343 specifically asked at the panel if a fan would be kind enough to remake Blood Gulch on the biggest island, so that’s possible too. The new map and related tools are all being released for free on April 11, just a few days after the Castle Map Pack arrives on April 8.

Halo 4 Castle Map Pack Will Be Deployed On April 8

In a blog post, official Xbox spokesman Major
Nelson announced that a new map pack for Halo 4 will be released on April 8,
and revealed a new trailer.

According to Nelson, the Castle Map pack
focuses on team objective and vehicular combat, and will introduce three new
maps and a six-on-six playlist.

Here are the details, and be sure to watch
the trailer at the end of this post.

New Battlegrounds: Castle Map Pack

Daybreak: Two UNSC bases
oppose each other in this large asymmetrical map. Teams must split focus
between attacking the enemy base while playing close defense to their own.
Claim your team's sniper rifle to cover the central Man Cannon, or grab a
Warthog to push through the side channels and flank the enemy base. The Rocket
Launcher and Banshee both spawn in positions diagonal to the starting bases;
claiming their firepower early is crucial to land the first flag cap or take an
early lead in kills.

Outcast: Controlling vehicle paths is critical in this circular map set in a
desert environment. Outcast features frequent Mantis vs. Wraith battles, so
teams must keep their drivers informed with constant communication to get the
drop on enemy vehicles. While driving the Mantis, you can target fusion coils
in tunnels to flush out camping opponents directly into your rain of fire, or
cover your flag runner's dash to a friendly Warthog. If you find yourself
without a vehicle, race to the secondary bases to secure a power weapon or drop
on enemies for a game-changing hijack.

 Perdition: Blending long sightlines, vehicles,
and close-quarters combat, Perdition caters to nearly any gameplay style.
Wheelmen and gunners will be right at home in this urban environment as a
well-placed Warthog can lock down a quarter of the map, securing valuable
ordnances for the team. Learning the interior routes is essential to both
escaping danger and finishing off ranged kills. Be sure to look for the Gravity
Hammer in Power Station 3 – an ideal revenge weapon against a pesky sniper or a
big surprise for an enemy Warthog.

The
Castle Map Pack will be available on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft Points.
Players who purchase the "Halo 4" War Games Map Pass* or "Halo 4" Limited
Edition will receive access to all three Map Packs (Crimson, Majestic, and
Castle) at a 15 percent savings versus purchasing them individually.

New
Playlist: "Castle DLC"

The
Castle Map Pack brings a new playlist to the War Games experience called
"Castle DLC," a six-versus-six playlist that focuses on both team play and
coordinated objective gameplay.

The
new maps will also be integrated into existing Infinity Slayer, Big Team
Objective, and Dominion playlists. DLC maps will appear in a playlist if all
members of the match have the content purchased or the War Games Map Pass.

Halo 4 is getting yet another batch of DLC next month. Entitled the Castle Map Pack, the content adds three new multiplayer maps: Daybreak, Outcast and Perdition. Unlock In-Game Halo 4 Bonuses To Celebrate Release of Halo: Silentium

The third book of Greg Bear’s enigmatic Forerunner Saga is coming soon, and 343 Industries is offering XP to those willing to do some decryption.

Greg Bear’s Halo: Cryptum and Halo: Primordium stand apart within the expanded universe of Halo fiction. Unlike most comic books and novels within the setting, The Forerunner Saga leaps 100,000 years back in time to detail the final days of the mysterious Forerunner civilization. Filled with unusual technology and hard science fiction tropes, the novels challenge readers to think outside their normal boundaries, and grasp ideas like genetically transferred memories, artificial intelligence, and forced species evolution.

The third book of the series, Halo: Silentium, is targeting release on March 19th. Publisher Tor and developer 343 Industries have teamed up to help hype the release. Starting today, gamers (and readers) can head to Halo Waypoint to try and track down “encrypted communications” via bulletins and forums on the site. In addition, the actual book of Halo: Silentium will have embedded data within the text of the e-book and paperback editions that presumably also unlocks additional content.

It’s all very mysterious.

Have you read any of the Greg Bear Halo novels? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
