Engadget goes hands-on with ex-Valve engineer’s AR glasses

When Valve let up to 25 hardware development staff go in February, Jeri Ellsworth was one of them, and she was working on a pair of 3D augmented-reality glasses at the time called Cast AR. Ellsworth continued work on them with her new company, Technical Illusions, and recently let our friends at Engadget take them out for a spin at the Maker Faire 2013 event in San Mateo, CA.

Cast AR is described as a “projected augmented reality system” on the company’s site. Ellsworth said she plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign later in the year to fund the project, with the goal of each kit adding up to less than $ 200 for buyers. The site notes plans to include a development kit with each pair.

Nvidia Shield: Joystiq goes hands-on

The Nvidia Shield arrives next month for $ 349.99, and yesterday I got to sit down with the final version of the hardware. The first thing I noticed was the heft: bulkier than a PS Vita, but no less comfortable.

Where the PS Vita sacrificed bigger buttons for smaller form factor, the Nvidia Shield takes a lot of inspiration from the Xbox 360 controller. In fact, the left and right triggers feel identical to the Xbox 360 and, more or less, so does the d-pad. The one big difference from Microsoft’s gamepad is the symmetrical analog sticks.

Eric Ruth goes crowdfunding route for ‘Hauntlings’ project

Eric Ruth of Eric Ruth Games has an extensive history of creating de-makes, and now he’s branching out to create the original title Hauntlings. Using Indiegogo for crowdfunding, Ruth is seeking $ 35,000 to create his 2D 2-vs-2 side-scrolling multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game featuring supernatural entities.

“I’ve always had the means to create a free project on my own from beginning to end on my own, however this particular title actually has expenses and I can’t afford them on my own,” said Ruth in his pitch video. “Unfortunately, I’ll need the assistance from my awesome – and very sexy – fan base to complete Hauntlings and make it the very best it can be.”

Being a competitive online game, it would seem Ruth is seeking to hire some help and cover infrastructure costs. Ruth’s previous projects include the Team Fortress 2 arcade beat-em-up and Pixel Force: Halo.

‘The Forest’ puts on Oculus Rift, goes exploring

The Forest is a first-person horror game currently in development for the PC and Oculus Rift. After surviving a plane crash at the outset of the game, players must build and thrive in a mysterious forest, scavenging materials throughout the day and defending against an indigenous enemy by night.

Developer Ben Falcone promises changing weather and tides that shift with the day/night cycle. Players will have to chop down trees to build and make fires, scavenge food or plant seeds to grow, while traps will be necessary to maintain a safe perimeter and defend the home. On the game’s about page, the nocturnal ne’er-do-wells are described as “a clan of genetic mutant enemies that have beliefs, families and morals.”

The Forest is tentatively scheduled to launch in late 2013, and is now vying for a spot on Steam Greenlight.

Manhunt goes to PS2 Classics on May 14

The Manhunt begins on PSN May 14

Rockstar North’s stealth slash slaughter game, Manhunt, launches on PSN next week on May 14, available in the PS2 Classics section for $ 10. European PSN users will have to wait until Wednesday, when their store is updated.

In the announcement post, Rockstar also says the next game up for re-release is The Warriors. Manhunt joins Bully, Midnight Club 3, Red Dead Revolver and various Grand Theft Auto games, all available on PSN now.

The PS2 Classic generated much controversy when it launched in 2003 for its gruesome murder scenarios and animations – a few examples include suffocating enemies with plastic bags, strangling them with wire and eviscerating others with table saws. In 2007, Rockstar produced a sequel in Manhunt 2, which was banned in the UK for almost six months before it was cleared for launch.

NHL 14 cover vote goes to the sweet sixteen

NHL 14 cover vote goes to the next round

EA Sports has announced the final sixteen players that have advanced to the next round of voting for NHL 14‘s cover. Each of the remaining players are lumped into a bracket format, competing head-to-head until the final match-up is decided and revealed during the 2013 Stanley Cup Final.

According to EA, more than 12 million votes have been cast in the competition’s first two rounds, “with daily vote totals up nearly 70% over the NHL 13 Cover Vote Campaign.”

Fans signed into their EA account can vote an unlimited number of times during this round until May 12 at 11:59pm ET. Votes can be doubled on Thursdays on Twitter and Instagram by using specific hashtags for each of the remaining players.

NHL 14 launches in North America on September 10, 2013, and worldwide on September 13. My expert recommendations can be found in the image above.

Monaco for XBLA goes full monte this Friday

Image

Monaco will break out of its Xbox Live Arcade certification holding cell this Friday, May 10. The game, which was supposed to sneak onto XBLA April 24, was delayed due to a bug, which would cause disconnects during online play. The PC version launched as expected.

Our review of the game a couple weeks ago said Monaco “runs deeper than its heist theme, presenting a challenge for hardcore fans of strategy and clever design.”
