Kongregate’s Top Three Free Games: June 2013

As they do each month, our sister site Kongregate has once again provided us with details about their current best offerings. All of these games are playable for free, and the selections and descriptions below have been provided by Kongregate's Rebecca Francis. Give them a chance and let us know what you think in the comments section.

————————————————————————–

The Last Stand: Dead Zone

We’ve all got to face the fact that a zombie apocalypse is imminent, and this game is perfect preparation. Claim your territory, collect supplies, and rescue survivors in order to fend off the endless hoards. Best of all, you can choose between trading with other players or raiding their compounds!

Giants and Dwarves TD

It’s your responsibility to lead the dwarves to victory in this multi-level tower-defense extravaganza. Utilize two-story defense strategies, or simply direct your soldiers to scale the legs of these mighty foes. This game definitely provides a welcome twist on the classic TD.

Questopia

If you’re looking for a good dungeon crawler, this is it. Explore over 20 levels of a mysterious pyramid in order to unlock the secrets (and booty!) inside. This brilliant game solves the problem of too much loot. Don’t just drop it; sacrifice it for a boost in XP! Face up against dozens of creative enemies, learn spells, and clean out one floor at a time.

Check out last month's picks.

Incredipede’s Linux version goes free

This image of Incredipede's creature next to a penguin isn't just for the adorbs

The adorable picture above is letting you know that Incredipede on Linux is now absolutely free.

Incredipede developer Colin Northway says he made the Linux version free “because Linux users are such strong supporters of indie games,” and because he enjoys its open source philosophy. Incredipede is available for Linux right here, and though it will run fine out of the gate Northway includes a list of tweaks to make it extra pretty.

Incredipede is also on sale on Steam for $ 5 through June 24. This is all part of an “Open Source Appreciation Week,” and 50 percent of sales directly through Northway’s Humble Store hub will benefit FlashDevelop and Box2D, two open source programs that he used to create Incredipede.

Free Battlefield 3 Close Quarters DLC until June 18

Battlefield 3 players have until June 18 to download the Close Quarters DLC at no cost in celebration of E3 and as a big “thank you” for collectively playing BF3 for over one billion hours.

You can access the DLC on the in-game store for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 or in the Origin app for PC players by using the redeem code “BF3E3“. Battlefield 3 Premium is also half off on Origin for $ 14.99, so if you haven’t bought Premium yet, now is a good time. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 players will pay a bit more at $ 24.99. DICE has unlocked the “Tombstone Squad” dog tag and will also be sending out invites to Premium members to participate in the exclusive Battlefield 4 Beta.

Battlefield 3: Close Quarters DLC Free On PC

Entering a special E3 promo code on EA's Origin service unlocks the Close Quarters DLC pack for Battlefield 3.

To get your free content pack, launch Origin and select "Redeem Product Code…" under the Origin menu on the top bar. Enter "BF3E3" (without the quotes) and you should unlock the Close Quarters pack.

Sadly this offer only seems to be good for PC players, but console fans can console themselves with the fact that Close Quarters is our resident Battlefield expert's least favorite content pack for DICE's shooter.

Yoshida: ‘PS4 is region free’

The PlayStation 4 is “region free,” according to Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida. At Monday’s E3 conference, Sony announced its new console will launch at $ 399, and comes with “no restrictions” on used games. Afterwards, Yoshida took to Twitter with the extra bit of PS4 news.

It’s unclear if Yoshida’s statement indicates the PS4 will be region-free in the same way the PS3 is. The PS3 can play game discs no matter which geographical region they’re tied to, minus the sole exception of Persona 4 Arena. There are region-based PlayStation Network restrictions when it comes to downloadable games on the PS3.

We’ve reached out to Sony to clarify the details.

Free To Play World Of Tanks Coming To Xbox 360

The popular free to play online tank game from Wargaming.net is coming to Xbox 360.

The game will be free to download, just as it is on the PC and was called, “the best World of Tanks experience,” by the company’s representative. The game will offer 15 on 15 player multiplayer, and his been modified to work with the Xbox 360 controller.

A trailer for the game was shown lots of tanks shooting at other tanks, unsurprising considering the name and nature of the game.

The game will be available to download this summer, and Xbox 360 is the only console it will for which it will be available.

Fable 3 currently free on Xbox Marketplace

Fable 3 currently free on Xbox Marketplace

Fable 3, the game in the series we all tried to forget until something worse came along in Fable Heroes, is currently free on the Xbox Marketplace. It’s still unclear if this is a bug, since the way you obtain it gratis is a little convoluted, or if this is some portend to today’s Microsoft press conference.

Here’s how to get the game for free (which we’ve tested): You must be an Xbox Gold member. Head on over to the game’s page and click purchase. Yes, it says that it’s $ 20 (or whatever it is in your regional currency). Now comes the important part, make sure you are paying with Microsoft Points, not with your credit card. You should see a screen similar to the one above that lists the game for free.

Enjoy! As much as anybody can enjoy Fable 3.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]
