Volition and Deep Silver Introduce Saints Row Hail To The Chief Video Series

With Saints Row: The Third, Volition set its Saints Row series apart from other open-world action games. In the lead up to that title's release, the studio created a series of "Steelport Memories" videos that showed off the absurd situations in which players would find themselves.

Publisher Deep Silver has upped the ante, and together with Volition has launched a new "Hail to the Chief" video series. In this first entry, Airplane, you'll see the president use the power of his mind to rocket an alien into the air after busting out some dance moves.

We've also got the box art for the Commander in Chief Edition, which we previously detailed. Saints Row IV arrives on August 20, 2013, for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Rumor: Freefall Racers for Kinect being published by Deep Silver, headed to XBLA [update]

Rumor Freefall Racers, Kinect racer for XBLA, being published by Deep Silver

Deep Silver will publish an upcoming gesture-based racing game for Kinect called Freefall Racers. The first breadcrumb in this trail comes from an Australian rating that has surfaced, outing Deep Silver as publisher.

The developer is Smoking Gun Interactive, whose most recent work includes two Kinect experiences, Mars Rover Landing and Home Run Stars, so a new Kinect project would make sense. The Vancouver-based studio at least partly funded Freefall Racers with help from the Canadian government, as evidenced by the $ 461,243 contributed through the Canada Media Fund (PDF) last year.

Our first glimpse of the game is courtesy of environmental artist Anthony Leonati, who published six screens from Freefall Racers on his personal website. [Update: The images have been pulled from Leonati's website.] In addition to the screens, he also pegs Freefall Racers for Xbox Live Arcade, though his LinkedIn profile indicates he has since moved on from Smoking Gun to become a senior environment artist at EA.

We’ve followed up with Deep Silver and Smoking Gun Interactive for comment and will update this post accordingly.

Every new trailer for Rayman Legends is bittersweet. On one hand, each gorgeous example is a reminder of how much we're looking forward to playing it. On the other, it's a reminder that we were supposed to have the game in hand already.

In this latest trailer, Rayman and friends venture off a turtle's back and under the sea for some mischief. You'll be able to try this out for yourself when Ubisoft delivers the game into our eager hands (finally) on September 3, 2013, on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U. If you're desperate to give it a try now, you can grab the Wii U-exclusive challenge mode from the eShop right now.

Deep Silver clarifies Metro: Last Light PS4, SDK reports

Andrew Prokhorov, creative director on Metro: Last Light at developer 4A Games, recently had the nuance of his words lost in translation, according to publisher Deep Silver. The ITCChannel interview allegedly shook out details about a version of Metro: Last Light for PS4, the release of a software development kit (SDK) for Metro and downloadable content details.

“It is no secret that 4A Games do want to release an SDK for Metro, finish the extremely promising multiplayer component and release this in some form, and investigate a PlayStation 4 version provided it makes commercial sense,” a Deep Silver representative informed Joystiq. “Although no development has started on any next-gen console versions [of Metro: Last Light]. We have confirmed these hopes and ideas plenty of times before.”

The statement continues, “However, all these ideas are just ideas at the moment. It will be some time before we can officially commit to any of these projects or suggest when they might materialize. They genuinely might all happen, but equally none of them might happen. Anyone expecting Metro: Last Light as a PS4 launch game is probably going to be disappointed…”

Deep Silver plans on confirming details about Metro: Last Light DLC in the near future. Pick up Last Light on May 14.

UnderCurrent aims to bring deep sea exploration to Oculus Rift

UnderCurrent is an Unreal-powered deep sea exploration game designed for Oculus Rift from a group of university students over in the UK. The group became fascinated with VR technology and has already put together three different levels, though the collective notes that some of the core mechanics of UnderCurrent are still undetermined.

These students are also maintaining a work blog chronicling each step of the design process, covering everything from music to artwork and team bios. The developers promise more videos and updates as work continues over the coming summer.

Disney Dips Deep In The Toy Box In Latest Disney Infinity Trailer

Disney Infinity's big hook is that it's essentially two games in one. In addition to providing character-themed gameplay based on familiar licenses, the game allows players to jam elements from a wide array of Disney properties together in a chaotic, free-form Toy Box mode. A new trailer shows off more of the Toy Box action, including samples of the kinds of games-within-a-game creations that players can make on their own.

The clip shows off what's possible given enough time and interest. In many ways, it's a lot like LittleBigPlanet 2. Some players are going to be content playing the baked-in games or downloading other peoples' creations, while others will likely spend hours tweaking switches and logic controls to make their cars-themed pinball machine work exactly the way they want. The gallery of screens at the bottom focus more on the chaotic mash-up angle that the game provides.

Disney Infinity will be hitting stores on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and 3DS on August 18. It was originally slated for a June release, but it was delayed so the development team could make sure that it "sings and pops."

This couple’s love is infectious; partners get handpicked by Deep Silver to receive zombie-themed wedding

Deep Silver announced today that they have chosen one lucky couple to receive a zombie-themed wedding in London to help celebrate the release of their upcoming “slaughter the undead” simulator, Dead Island Riptide. The search for an engaged couple began back in January, and after a careful review of MANY video applications, Deep Silver has selected the adorable Jennifer Jones and Rob Blackmore to be THE zombified couple who will exchange eternal vows and eat each other’s brains on April 23rd. Jennifer and Rob were picked due to their love for the Dead Island franchise, their love for zombies and Halloween, and most importantly, their love for each other (seriously, these two are adorable together). Jennifer was particularly ecstatic upon hearing the news that she and her partner had won the competition, saying, “We’re thrilled to have been chosen to be the official zombie bride and groom for Dead Island Riptide! We’re big fans of Dead Island and the horror genre, and a zombie wedding is a dream come true for us. Thanks Deep Silver & Koch Media!”

In addition to hosting the zombie-style beach wedding, Deep Silver will also be sending the two zombies-in-love off on a Caribbean honeymoon, where they will hopefully be able to just enjoy themselves and not have to stave off zombie hunters so they can just be undead in peace. The nuptials will take place at One Mayfair and be just like a traditional wedding, except Jennifer will be arriving in style on the Dead Island pickup truck and music will be provided by an undead mariachi band (so just like my dream wedding, basically).

You can follow the most awesome wedding to ever exist on Twitter at #RiptideWedding or get more information right here on the official Facebook page. Check out Jennifer and Rob’s cute winning video submission below, complete with DOGGIES (who aren’t zombified, sadly; YOU MISSED A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY, GUYS!). Congrats to Jen and Rob, and be sure to check out Dead Island Riptide when it releases on April 26th for the 360, PS3, and PC.

Deep Silver Shows Off Ridiculous Saints Row IV Gameplay

What was once planned as downloadable content is now a full-fledged sequel, and new publisher Deep Silver debuted the first gameplay demo of Saints Row IV at PAX East. In a room at the Westin hotel in Boston, developer Volition ran through some features and abilities that gamers can look forward to in the upcoming open-world title.

At the outset of the game, you learn that your character has now been elected President of the United States. This was made immediately apparent thanks to a remix of "Hail to the Chief," as well as the fact that the character was decked out in full USA regalia (Uncle Sam hat, American flag pants, etc). Within seconds, the Commander in Chief was hitting pedestrians in the crotch and knocking them out with Stone Cold Stunners.

After a few more nutshots, we got a glimpse of some of the ridiculous new weapons. The Inflate-O-Ray does just what you'd guess, filling up human targets with air until their head looks like a hot air balloon just before it explodes. Another was the dubstep gun, which immediately makes pedestrians in the vicinity dance. Any cars in the area magically sport hydraulics and start bouncing up and down.

Weapon customization was a great system in the previous game, but it was strictly for function. In Saints Row IV, customization has been extended to include cosmetic upgrades. For one example, Volition showed how the standard bazooka could be modified to look like a guitar case ("El Fugitivo") or the Super Scope light gun for SNES (called the "Soopa Six" here).

Brand new to the series are the new superpowers, and they look like they'll be a blast to control. Your character can sprint at insane speeds, knocking cars and people out of the way. He can also jump ludicrous distances, glide/fly, and perform a move similar to the thunder drop in Infamous. Enemies and pedestrians can be turned into blocks of ice with an ice projectile, and they'll shatter when struck. Telekinetic abilities allow you to lift and throw objects at will, so you're free to toss trucks at pedestrians or throw a helpless old lady off of a skyscraper. Volition says that these superpowers can be used while firing standard weapons, so you won't have to worry about constantly switching back and forth.

Activities will be making a return, and this time they'll come with bronze, silver, and gold awards depending on your performance. One new activity we saw was Mech Suit Mayhem, which is similar to the previous game's Tank Mayhem but instead gifting you with a (you guessed it) bipedal weaponized mech suit.

We saw less than ten minutes of the game in action, but that was more than enough to make me confident that it's going to be a blast. Combining the already-great Saints Row gameplay with a wide array of new weapons and powers sounds like a surefire recipe for a good time.
