Watch Arms’ Zany Crew Spring Into Action

Arms is not your typical boxing league. Fighters sport spring-loaded limbs that allow them to punch opponents from across the ring, special gloves let them set each other on fire, and one of the challengers is a mummy. With its newly-introduced quirky characters and a diverse arsenal of weapons, Nintendo's upcoming 3D fighting game puts a new spin on motion-controlled brawling.

The cast of Arms brims with colorful personality in the new character trailer below. Comprised of a springy everyman, peppy popstar, brooding ninja, undead menace, and mechanical genius, everyone brings their own unique fighting style to the ring. Whether it's Ribbon Girl's aerial acrobatics or Ninjara's smoke bomb teleportation, all the boxers have something that gives them an edge over their competitors.

Combined with these individual powers are six specialized gloves boasting different effects. The Toaster weapon lights opponents on fire and deals continuous damage, while Sparky temporarily stuns them with electricity. Players can mix and match powers by wearing different glove types on their left and right hands. This adds a layer of experimentation to the combat as fighters test combinations like the Slapamander and Megaton or Boomerang and Revolver.

Ubisoft Announces Release Dates For Three VR Games, Including Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Ubisoft has revealed the release dates for three of its previously announced VR titles. If you've invested in a VR setup, you'll have some new gaming options between October and December.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew lets players join the Star Trek crew and take on several missions as the captain, or a member of the tactical, engineering, or navigation stations. It's set to release on Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and HTC Vive starting November 29. You can read our hands-on impressions from the demo here.

Eagle Flight takes you on high-speed multiplayer races through the skies and landmarks around Paris as an eagle. It's coming to Oculus Rift on October 18, PlayStation VR on November 8, and HTC Vive on December 20. Go here to take a look at our thoughts on the title.

Finally, Werewolves Within is an adaptation of the card game Werewolf, in which one player secretly takes on the role of a bloodthirsty creature and relies on deception to fool the rest of the players. It's coming to Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and HTV Vive starting December 6. We checked it out a while ago, and you can read our thoughts on the game here.

In addition to these new titles, Ubisoft is releasing a VR patch for TrackMania Turbo for PlayStation VR on November 8.

Ubisoft’s Star Trek Bridge Crew Is Everything I Ever Wanted From The Final Frontier

Tonight, I got to step onto the bridge of a Federation starship. The U.S.S. Aegis (NX-1787) is fully equipped for deep space exploration, and I got to take the helm, target Klingon birds of prey, and energize the transporters. If you've played Space Team or Artemis, you'll feel right at home in a Star Trek Bridge Crew uniform.

I had the fortune of playing the demo three times, taking on all but the Captain role (which was handled by a Red Storm team member). The game is based in the J.J. Abrams reboot universe, complete with lens flare. In the sample mission, our crew was tasked with warping to investigate a distress call at a space station orbiting a dying star.

The captain has unique information, bringing up a message from Starfleet, directing helm to the appropriate mission location, and indicating to crew what is necessary to succeed. Upon arrival, the station is discovered to be heavily damaged. Escape pods with survivors are in the area.

In order to rescue them, Tactical must scan them. This requires Helm to bring the Aegis close enough. Once scanned, shields must down to lock and engage the transporter.

After bringing the first survivors aboard, a Klingon bird of prey decloaks. On the captain's orders, shields are raised, engineering diverts power to shields and phaser range, and tactical opens fire with phaser batteries and loaded torpedo tubes.

Since shields need to be down to bring survivors aboard, the mission quickly becomes a juggle of defending against multiple birds of prey and using the transporters. Bringing the shields up too soon while beaming people aboard can kill them, as can ramming an escape pod. We learned that the hard way.

The mission ends by warping out while under heavy fire. When the ship takes too much damage, NPCs on the bridge crew can die a fiery death.

Each of the three stations I manned was an enjoyable experience that blended laughter with moments of intensity. The game is optimized for motion controls, but playable with a gamepad. It will be coming to Rift, Vive, and PlayStation VR.

I demoed it with Rift and Oculus Touch controllers, which worked extremely well. The stations are all designed as touch panels and operating each, including the helm steering, was extremely easy and intuitive.

When Star Trek Bridge Crew launches this fall, it will support one to four players. If you're playing alone, you will do so as captain. You'll be able to hot-swap to other positions to execute more complicated maneuvers.

There will be a story campaign, but also procedurally generated missions to keep players with more to do after finishing the scripted content.

I'm very much looking forward to stepping back onto the bridge of the Aegis this fall. Ubisoft is going all-in on VR, and I hope it keeps delivering experiences like Werewolves Within (which I played at GDC) and Star Trek Bridge Crew.

One Possible Future For The Star Wars Episode VII Crew

Tired of Star Wars yet? Never. And the content just keeps coming. In fact, some of the best Star Wars fan content is as compelling as the official media. Take for example this motion comic starring Rey, Finn, Poe and BB-8 as they storm a First Order stronghold and confront a nefarious Sith Lord…who turns out to be a familiar face.

Youtube user eldusto84 chopped up the images from Stephen Byrne's comic strip, Star Wars Episode 7.5. …whose identity is not what they expected! If you liked this, you'll probably love the hilarious Kylo Ren sketch from SNL.

Ubisoft Purchases The Crew Dev Ivory Tower

Ubisoft has announced that The Crew developer Ivory Tower is now part of the family. The publisher confirmed the purchase on its German blog this morning.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Ubisoft says that the studio is comprised of approximately 100 employees. Ivory Tower is preparing to release a major expansion for the The Crew called Wild Run on November 7.

Ubisoft indicates that The Crew has 3 million players to-date. For more on The Ride, check out our review. You can also check out our coverage of Wild Run from E3 this year.

Note: The blog post has gone live on the English site. Sourcing has been updated.

Our Take
This is a strong hint that Ubisoft will be continuing The Crew as an ongoing franchise. This is the second racing-focused studio now owned by the publisher. The other is Reflections, which is currently contributing to The Division.

The Left 4 Dead Crew Is Back In Action In Latest Free Zombie Army Trilogy Update

Left 4 Dead’s diverse cast of grizzled survivors is now fighting through a different kind of zombie army. The eight-person cast of characters from both Left 4 Dead games is now playable in Rebellion’s Zombie Army Trilogy. The update is absolutely free for all owners of the PC version of the game.

(Please visit the site to view this media)

The update trailer shows Francis, Zoey, Lewis, Bill, Nick, Ellis, Coach, and Rochelle in action. Each of their characters looks just like you'd remember from their original Left 4 Dead appearances. Bill especially remains true to his original character and calmly beheads an attacking nazi-zombie with a swing of his rifle. The gallery below offers a first look at how the eight survivors will fit into the Zombie Army Trilogy universe. For even more glorious zombie fighting action, check out our Test Chamber episode featuring the game here.

If you need a bit more lore behind this time-traveling crossover, 2000 AD has released a digital comic book that helps to bridge the narrative gap. Just like the PC update, the comic can be downloaded for free.

Though the update is only for PC users, Zombie Army Trilogy is out for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will also be 66% off on Steam from now until August 24 to celebrate the new addition.
