Academy of Art University students to produce Borderlands short

The multidisciplinary effort gives Academy of Art students the chance to form teams and submit storyboards. The chosen storyboard, and its team, will then be given the go-ahead, and a chance to interview for internships at 2K. Students get some valuable experience out of the deal, and 2K and Gearbox get a free, fanmade advertisement. The film – whatever it ends up being, and whoever ends up making it – is expected by the end of the year.

Valve’s Gabe Newell Receiving BAFTA Academy Fellowship

Gabe Newell is a popular man these days. The Valve co-founder was recently inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame, and will now be honored by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) with the Academy Fellowship at this year’s British Academy Games Awards ceremony on March 5.
"It is an honor for myself and everyone at Valve to be presented such an award by one of the world’s most respected and recognized organizations,” says Newell. “Valve owes a tremendous thanks to many in the UK – to those who have played our games, to the great support of the UK press, and to UK-based creative contributors such as Garry Newman. I look forward to accepting this prestigious honor on behalf of everyone in our community."
The Fellowship is awarded annually to an individual recognized for their contribution to the video game medium. Newell and Valve are known for the Half-Life series, as well as the Steam digital-distribution platform.
"Gabe's contribution to the industry is unique, and he is very different to many others that BAFTA could recognize,” Harvey Elliott, chair of BAFTA’s Games Committee, wrote on the BAFTA website. “As well as enjoying great critical and commercial success with phenomenally popular franchises such as Portal and Half-Life, his work in giving back to the games industry through developing and showcasing other games makers has been outstanding. He is an inspirational developer and truly deserving of our Fellow recognition."
Valve has received BAFTA awards in the past for best multiplayer in 2009 and 2010 for both Left 4 Dead games, and awards for best game, story, and design for Portal 2 in 2012. Other games Fellows include Peter Molyneux, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Will Wright. A full nominee list for this year's ceremony can be found here.
The ceremony will be streamed live on Twitch.

2013 Academy Awards red carpet event streaming on Xbox Live
Xbox Live’s latest streaming event struts its stuff at 6pm ET on Sunday, February 24, when film aficionados in the US with an Xbox Live Gold subscription can tune into the Associated Press’ red carpet coverage of this year’s annual Academy Awards. SmartGlass users can also engage with the second-screen experience through their tablets and smartphones.
During the event, Xbox Live users can participate in the same interactive voting and tweeting stuff introduced during the Presidential Election coverage. We’re not sure what kind of questions will be asked, but if the Presidential Election was any indication, it’ll be a lot of bar graphs showing community support levels for Jessica Chastain’s dress and questions about foreign policy in Iran.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy enrolls in Mac App Store, cross-platform on Steam
Aspyr has ported Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy to Mac, available today through the Mac App Store or as a cross-platform Steam Play game. Tuition for the Jedi Academy will set Padawans – and whatever the Sith equivalent of a Padawan is – back $ 9.99.
Of course, if you’ve already purchased the Windows version on Steam, you get access to the Mac port as part of that initial purchase. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy requires OS X 10.7.5 or higher – if you’re looking to enroll in a real Jedi class, you should probably think about moving to New York.

Hero Academy now enrolling on Mac
Hero Academy, already available on iOS and PC, is now available on Mac via Steam. The addictive turn-based strategy game from Robot Entertainment (Orcs Must Die) pits two teams of various units against one another, tasking players with either destroying the opposing team’s crystals, or eliminating all enemy units.
The Steam version is $ 5 and works on both PC and Mac and includes the special Team Fortress 2 team. Furthermore, all purchased teams work across all versions of the game, including iOS.

Failing the NHL 13 academy
I love sports, but I know next to nothing about hockey. Maybe my lack of NHL love has something to do with my Wisconsin upbringing, a sort of “no-man’s land” for professional hockey. The Milwaukee Admirals AHL team doesn’t excite me, and picking between the Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and Detroit Red Wings is an uncomfortable proposition.
My knowledge of the sport itself is even more limited. Aside from the terms “icing” and “line changes,” hockey is alien to me. Joystiq recently ran an editorial discussing how simulation sports games don’t do enough to assist people like me in learning the ropes in the sports they feature. To test that theory, I attempted to learn more about hockey through NHL 13.

Buy Art Academy or Crosswords Plus digitally, get rare Donkey Kong: Original Edition [update]

If you buy either game from the eShop and register it on Club Nintendo, you’ll get a free download of Donkey Kong: Original Edition, a special version of the NES Donkey Kong that has been edited to add the “cement factory” level. It’s previously been released only with a special Wii bundle in Europe and with Japanese New Super Mario Bros. 2 purchases.
Neither of those games seem like particularly natural lead-ins for Donkey Kong, but at the very least, the offer will sway some people who planned to buy one of those games anyway, and will now choose to do so digitally.
Update: The deal applies to more games than Nintendo chose to mention this morning. Style Savvy: Trendsetters, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, and Paper Mario: Sticker Star all give you access to DK Original Edition if bought digitally and registered before January 6. Thanks to reader Thomas for pointing that out.
