Awesome videogame art exhibition iam8bit returns to LA next month

Art and videogames, UNITE! The awesomely fantastic videogame art expo, iam8bit Entertainment System, is coming back to Los Angeles, opening on June 7th and lasting until June 30th (there is also another expo going on around that time that has something to do with videogames, E3 something or other, probably not important). An international showcase will be ready for the public’s eyes this summer, featuring many new and returning artists who have been inspired by 1980′s videogame classics.

Jon M. Gibson, co-curator of the show, offered these words about the upcoming event that will be chock full of nostalgia: “iam8bit has evolved throughout the years to showcase awesome art, and recreate the most nostalgic moments of our childhood – the ultimate in fantasy fulfillment for all fans in attendance. We take great care to craft a uniquely incredible, in-person experience, putting imagination on display in a way that will surprise most gallery-goers.”

iam8bit has hosted personal pop-culture exhibits before, including It’s the shizNICK!, which payed homage to 90′s Nicktoons (MY CHILDHOOD), and Grace & Ritual, which was all about showcasing female artists exclusively.

Over 80 artists from all over the world will be getting the spotlight this June, with exclusive interactive installations to be revealed at a later date. More info about the event can be found here, as well as the most 80′s neon flyer to ever exist in the universe. I now leave you with my favorite piece from 2011′s show: SHY GUY PICNIC.

Donkey Kong revisits the jungle once more in Donkey Kong Returns 3D for the 3DS

Back in 2010, Nintendo’s favorite gorilla Donkey Kong returned to the countryside in the Wii’s Donkey Kong Country Returns. The title was filled with everything we loved about the Donkey Kong Country series: barrels, vines, and mine cart levels that required 1,000 lives to complete. Nintendo is now bringing back Donkey Kong for a re-return on its portable 3DS, for fans and newcomers alike. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D contains all the frantic platforming of the original, but now it is in 3D and has some awesome stuff included (the bestest thing being NO WAGGLE TO BLOW AND ROLL, THANK GOD!).

For those of us who thought Donkey Kong Country Returns was a bit hard (everyone), the new 3D port has a New Mode, where Donkey and Diddy Kong can take an extra hit, meaning they now have three hearts each before they keel over and we see the Life Balloon pop screen that we all know and love and have burned into our retinas. Also included in the game’s New Mode are helpful, equipable items to make everyone’s lives easier: Portable DK Barrels let Donkey bring Diddy to his side whenever he loses him, Green Balloons bring the Kongs back from the brink of death if they fall off a ledge into a bottomless pit (which will happen quite often), and Crash Guards make the simians temporarily invincible in the dreaded mine cart and rocket ship levels.

Masochists like me can choose to play the game as it was meant to be played with the title’s Original Mode, which doesn’t have these new items or extra hearts. Exclusive to Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a new, 9th world with 8 fresh levels once you beat the main story. Gamers can play co-op with a buddy who also has a copy of the game via a local wireless connection.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D barrels its way to Nintendo’s 3DS tomorrow via retail and the eShop. Check out more monkey business at the game’s website.

Need For Speed: Rivals announced

A new Need For Speed title called Need For Speed: Rivals has been announced to be currently in development.

Rivals is being developed by EA’s new studio Ghost Games, along with previous Need For Speed developers Criterion Games. The game will run on Frostbite 3.0, and will introduce a new feature called AllDrive to the game, which will purportedly allow for seamless transitions between singleplayer and multiplayer racing. According to EA, Ferrari have also made their way back to the Need For Speed franchise after a seven year hiatus, giving players the ability to drive cars such as the F12 Berlinetta.

Those are the stand-out features of the game revealed by EA. Others include improvements to various returning gameplay elements such as Autolog. The game will once again feature the ability to play as either a cop or racer in an open world, and will include various singleplayer and multiplayer challenges for each team.

Need For Speed: Rivals is set for release on PC and current-gen systems on November 19th, while a next-gen release will come sometime after that in 2013. More information on the game will be revealed at this year’s E3.

Adorable HeroClix Bioshock Infinite miniatures set to hit store shelves this summer

WizKids Games has announced a partnership with Irrational Games to bring you, the consumer, Bioshock Infinite HeroClix mini-figures/toys/children’s playthings. The Starter Pack and Gravity Feed collection will launch this summer and are both available for pre-order at various online retailers.

The Starter Pack contains six figures, two maps, Powers and Abilities Cards, Object and Terrain tokens, dice, and a rulebook, which is everything you need to get started (hence the clever name). The six miniatures included in the Starter Pack are recognizable main protagonists Automated Stallion, Handyman, and Flakman, with lesser-known characters Daisy Fitzroy, Elizabeth, and Booker DeWitt rounding out the collection.

For those who want a whole bunch of stuff all at once, the 24-figure Gravity Feed collection is also available for your hard-earned cash. This collection contains 14 different characters like Booker, Elizabeth, the Motorized Patriot, Zachary Comstock, the Boys of Silence (who are adorable tiny-sized and I can no longer ever be frightened of them ever), and more. The various figures sit atop a special Combat Dial tailored specifically for each one, which hopefully means there is a button under it that can cause Booker to use any of his Vigors (the best one was Undertow, because FACTS).

For more info on Bioshock Infinite HeroClix, look right over here. Anyone gonna pick any of these up and bash them together to simulate violence like we used to as kids?!

Metro: Last Light to receive four DLC packs this summer

Deep Silver has revealed, to the surprise of absolutely no sane or semi-informed gamer on this fucking planet, that Metro: Last Light will be receiving a series of DLC packs soon.

“Faction” and “Chronicle” will extend the game’s story mode, while “Tower” will introduce a “unique solo challenge” to the game. Looks like Deep Silver has has developed a knack of charging us for a challenge. The publishers have also said a “Developer” pack will be released, hinting at some kind of level editor or modding tool for the game. The first DLC pack to be released is Faction, which will arrive some time in June.

It has also been announced that all the DLC packs can be purchased at a discount through the Season Pass which is available for $ 14.99 through Steam, PSN, and Xbox LIVE. PlayStation Plus subscribers receive a 25% discount on the Season Pass from May 21st to June 4th in the US and May 22nd to June 5th in Europe and the rest of the world.
